Lock and tag or lock-out tag-out is a safety procedure which is used in industry and research settings to ensure that dangerous machines are properly shut off and not started up again prior to the completion of maintenance or servicing work. It requires that hazardous energy sources be "isolated and rendered inoperative" before any repair procedure is started.

"Lock and tag" works in conjunction with a lock usually locking the device, or energy with the hasp, and placing in such position so hazardous energies can not be turned on. The procedure requires that a tag be affixed to the locked device indicating that it should not be turned on.

Our main method of creating a lockout tagout placard is by using the Visumount process. An underlament (mounting glue), the graphic, and overlament (UV protection) are tacked to a piece of sintra (form of plastic). The sintra is then baked to seal the graphic onto the plastic. Once cooled the sintra is then stamped to required size. Two-way tape is applied to the back of the lockout tagout placard for mounting on the machine. For roof top units or machinery exposed to high levels of UV lighting, we use vinyl lockout tagout safety products and placards, which have a seven-year warranty against fading.

OSHA defines "Lockout/tagout" as the "…specific practices and procedures to safeguard employees from the unexpected energization or startup of machinery and equipment, or the release of hazardous energy during service or maintenance activities. This requires, in part, that a designated individual turns off and disconnects the machinery or equipment from its energy source(s) before performing service or maintenance and that the authorized employee(s) either lock or tag the energy-isolating device(s) to prevent the release of hazardous energy and take steps to verify that the energy has been isolated effectively."
